An Open Letter for More Native Plants on University Campuses

To the University Facilities and Grounds Committee:

Campus landscaping often relies on decorative plants selected mainly for appearance and uniformity. Some require intensive watering, fertilizer, pesticides, or replacement while providing limited habitat value.

A Gradual Shift Toward More Ecological Landscaping

Universities should gradually increase the share of native or locally adapted plants in new landscaping and major renovation projects.

Start with demonstration areas rather than replacing healthy landscapes unnecessarily. Select species suited to actual soil, shade, and rainfall conditions. Use signs to explain why more ecologically valuable landscapes may look less formal.

A gradual transition can reduce resource use while improving habitat for local insects and birds.

Native planting should not become a simplistic rule; some native species may be unsuitable for particular high-use campus locations.

A campus does not have to look wild everywhere to support biodiversity. It simply has to recognize that landscaping can serve ecological purposes as well as visual ones.

Grounds staff should be involved from the beginning because they understand irrigation, mowing, seasonal maintenance, and how students actually use campus landscapes.

Researchers should be shown estimates of both emissions and scheduling delay. That allows them to decide whether the environmental benefit is meaningful enough to justify waiting for a lower-carbon period.

A water budget should not reward departments for allowing landscapes to deteriorate. The purpose is to identify avoidable use and encourage appropriate plant selection, not simply to minimize consumption at any cost.

The comparison should include convenience. A theoretically efficient sharing system will fail if users must travel too far, wait too long, or complete complicated registration every time they borrow a tool.

Students could publish a short annual report comparing water, energy, and crop output. That would help future classes understand that controlled-environment agriculture involves tradeoffs rather than simple technological superiority.

Emergency contracts signed in advance can reduce confusion after a disaster, when municipalities are under pressure to remove debris quickly and may have little time to negotiate responsible handling.

Graduation traditions should be preserved where they carry meaning. The strongest changes will focus on invisible waste rather than removing symbolic elements simply to make the event appear more sustainable.
